Cost Preventing Half of UK Women from Freezing Their Eggs

According to a recent survey conducted by the London Women’s Clinic and the University of Southampton, it was found that cost is the main barrier preventing UK women from freezing their eggs. Although egg freezing can offer a kind of ‘fertility insurance’ for those who may face fertility issues in the future, the significant cost involved makes this option inaccessible for many. In the UK, the average price of a single cycle of egg freezing is £3,350, not including the mandatory storage fees that can amount to £275 per year. Furthermore, many women require more than one cycle to collect a sufficient number of eggs, thereby increasing the total cost. The survey also revealed that the majority of women would consider egg freezing if it was more affordable, indicating a significant gap in the demand and accessibility of this fertility treatment. This research brings to light the urgent need for more affordable fertility treatments in the UK, including egg freezing, to help individuals and couples realise their dreams of parenthood.
