A daily pill for the treatment of endometriosis, linzagolix, has been recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and will soon be available on the NHS. Endometriosis affects one in ten women of reproductive age, causing symptoms such as heavy, painful periods, pelvic pain between periods, pain when using the toilet, painful sex, tiredness and difficulty getting pregnant. Up to half of women diagnosed with endometriosis experience fertility issues. Linzagolix suppresses estrogen production to manage the condition. While it can cause bone mineral density loss as a side effect, the benefit is significant relief from pelvic pain. Linzagolix will be prescribed to those who have failed other treatments or surgery.
