Expert Reaction to Review Study Looking at Weight Loss in Women Before IVF

A new review study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine has examined the impact of weight loss on reproductive outcomes in women undergoing In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment. It revealed that weight loss before IVF was linked to higher overall pregnancy rates. However, the effect on live birth rates with assisted conception remained uncertain. Experts warn that while weight loss can improve fertility, its effect on IVF outcomes is less certain. They also highlighted the need for further research to determine whether intensive weight loss interventions can restore natural fertility and reduce the reliance on assisted conception methods. The research also touched on the current BMI threshold required to access assisted conception treatments via the NHS in the UK, suggesting that effective weight loss interventions could help more patients access timely IVF treatments.
