Does fasting affect fertility? This is a question that has been in the limelight recently, with studies giving conflicting information. Time-restricted eating (TRE), a form of intermittent fasting, has been linked to fertility, particularly in individuals with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). A 2025 study found that TRE could help those with PCOS establish more consistent ovulation patterns, potentially increasing the likelihood of pregnancy. Furthermore, as fasting can aid weight loss, it could improve fertility in those who are obese and suffer from conditions such as hypertension and high cholesterol, which can impact fertility negatively. However, it’s not all positive – fasting could also lead to nutritional deficiencies that can disrupt hormonal balance and reduce egg quality. Therefore, more research is needed to fully understand the correlation between fasting, fertility, and PCOS. While those dealing with obesity or PCOS might benefit from TRE, experts suggest that maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise are more beneficial ways to improve fertility for the general population.
