Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being increasingly used in the UK’s GP surgeries, particularly in the form of ambient voice technology (AVT) that transcribes consultations and summarises notes for electronic health records. While it’s suggested this technology allows doctors to have more personalised interaction with patients, critics argue it’s inadequately regulated and may increase workload. There are also concerns about the rapid deployment of the technology and the classification of AI tools as ‘medical devices’. The use of AI in medical practice is already widespread, leading to calls for more oversight and regulation. There are also fears that the drive towards AI could result in a two-tier NHS, where human interaction is limited and more patients opt for private consultations.
