The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued guidance on the use of contraceptives for women taking weight loss drugs. Experts have expressed their views on this advice. Dr Caroline Ovadia, Senior Clinical Lecturer in Obstetrics from University of Edinburgh, recommends that achieving a healthy, stable weight before pregnancy can benefit both maternal and fetal outcomes. She suggests that the use of GLP1 RA (a class of weight loss drugs) doesn’t indicate immediate harm but warns of potential side effects. Professor Ying Cheong, Consultant in Reproductive Medicine from University of Southampton, warns against the unregulated use of GLP-1 receptor agonists and their potential harm to reproductive health. Dr Bassel Wattar, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist from Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals, emphasises the importance of effective contraception while taking weight loss injections. He also mentions the potential benefit of weight loss for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can restore natural ovulation and boost chances of conceiving without need for IVF.
