A woman named Blanca in Nevada who had gone through in vitro fertilization (IVF) to conceive her son, Jonah, was forced to carry her deceased baby for a week due to denial of coverage by her health insurer. Already grieving from the loss of her baby who had no heartbeat at 18 weeks, she was dealt another blow when Aetna, her health insurer, denied her coverage for a stay in the hospital to be induced and deliver Jonah. The bureaucratic delays resulted in Blanca carrying her baby for a painful seven days before the insurance company finally approved her treatment. Unfortunately, she almost lost her life due to a ruptured uterus during the delivery. Blanca’s experience raises questions about the humanity and compassion in insurance policy decisions.
