In Warrington, women struggling to conceive might soon only be able to get a single round of fertility treatment funded by the NHS instead of the current three rounds. This is due to planned cuts announced by local health bosses. If these plans pass the ongoing consultation, only one round of treatment would be free for patients across the entirety of Cheshire and Merseyside, including Warrington. One round of IVF can cost up to £10,000 depending on the treatment required. The NHS Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board (ICB) is holding a six-week public consultation until July 15, where people can learn more about the proposed changes and share their views. Currently, the local NHS spends over £5 million on IVF treatments each year. It is estimated that reducing to one IVF cycle would save around £1.3 million annually. This move would align Cheshire and Merseyside with the majority of other areas in England where 66 percent of ICBs only fund one IVF cycle. Other changes are also being proposed within the new policy to standardise some eligibility criteria and update the local policy to reflect national clinical guidance.
