The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently launched new guidelines aimed at tackling the issue of adolescent pregnancy and related health complications. The guidelines are designed to aid countries in implementing effective strategies to reduce the number of adolescent pregnancies, which can have serious implications for the health of both the mother and the baby. The guidelines also highlight the importance of providing adolescents with the knowledge and services they need to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. This includes access to contraception, safe abortion services, and post-abortion care, as well as comprehensive sexuality education. The guidelines also emphasise the need for multidisciplinary, holistic care for adolescents who do become pregnant, including antenatal, childbirth, postpartum and newborn care, mental health and psychosocial support, and support for continued education. The new WHO guidelines are an important step forward in tackling adolescent pregnancy and its related health complications, and could have significant implications for the future health and wellbeing of young people around the world.
